Japan’s Ministry of Health Holds First Expert Meeting Following Supreme Court Ruling on Welfare Payments

On October 13, 2023, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare held its inaugural meeting of experts in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling. The court determined that the government’s decision to gradually reduce welfare payments was illegal.

This ruling has prompted calls from plaintiffs for the restoration of the reduced benefits. In light of this, the ministry plans to hold several more meetings to formulate a comprehensive response on behalf of the government.

The Supreme Court’s decision marks a significant moment for social welfare in Japan, where the welfare system, known as seikatsu hogo (生活保護), provides financial assistance to those in need, including the unemployed and low-income families. The ministry’s ongoing discussions aim to address the implications of the ruling and ensure that the welfare system remains effective and fair.
