In June of this year, authorities made a significant drug bust when they discovered approximately one ton of dried marijuana hidden in a shipping container that arrived at Tokyo Port from Vietnam. This amount represents the largest quantity of illegal drugs ever seized in a single operation in Japan.
The seizure was carried out by the Narcotics Control Department of Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, which has since arrested three Vietnamese individuals in connection with the case. Investigators believe that this incident is linked to an international drug trafficking organization.
Japan has strict drug laws, and the importation of illegal substances is taken very seriously. The discovery of such a large quantity of marijuana highlights ongoing concerns about drug smuggling routes in the region.
