Q&A: Why Are Typhoons Occurring Near Japan More Frequently?

Typically, typhoons form far south over the ocean before moving towards Japan. However, recent storms such as Typhoon No. 15 and Typhoon No. 12, which caused record rainfall in Kagoshima Prefecture (a region located on the southern tip of Japan’s Kyushu Island), have developed unusually close to Japan.

To understand why these storms are occurring more frequently near Japan, and what precautions should be taken during such events, we consulted Professor Kazuhisa Tsuboki from Nagoya University and Yokohama National University, who specializes in the mechanisms of typhoons and heavy rainfall.
