Stockpiled Rice Now Available at Osaka Supermarkets

On June 2, Aeon’s Osaka Dome City store began selling government-released stockpiled rice harvested in 2022. Each 5-kilogram bag is priced at ¥2,138, and there’s a limit of one bag per household.

By 8 a.m., about 1,000 people had lined up. The first customer, 82-year-old Yasushige Ikeda from Nishinari Ward, expressed the urgency of securing rice, as it’s a staple food that can sometimes be hard to find.

Aeon secured around 20,000 tons of rice from the government and had already started sales in Tokyo on June 1. Other retailers in the Kansai region, such as Izumiya and Hankyu Oasis, also plan to begin sales soon, though some may face delays.
