Japanese Supreme Court to Rule on Electoral Disparity Case This Month

In the context of the Japanese House of Representatives election held in October last year, a significant legal case has emerged concerning the disparity in voting power, commonly referred to as the “1 vote disparity” issue. This term describes the situation where votes in different electoral districts carry unequal weight, leading to a maximum disparity of 2.06 times in this particular election.

The Supreme Court of Japan is scheduled to deliver its ruling on this matter on October 26. Throughout the series of lower court proceedings, all 16 cases reviewed by high courts have concluded that the current voting system is constitutional. Given that the Supreme Court has not scheduled any further hearings to reconsider this stance, it is widely anticipated that the court will uphold the previous rulings, maintaining the constitutionality of the electoral system.
