The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Japan has officially compiled a review addressing the reasons behind its recent defeat in the House of Councillors election, which is the upper house of Japan’s National Diet (the country’s bicameral legislature). This review was presented during a meeting of the party’s joint meeting of both houses, known as the “両院議員総会” (Ryōin Giin Sōkai).
In light of the review, the LDP has initiated procedures to question whether to hold a temporary leadership election. Secretary-General Toshihiro Nikai has indicated his intention to resign from his position as a form of accountability for the party’s electoral loss. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was present at the meeting, expressed that he would take charge of the situation.
