The Public Security Examination Commission in Japan has officially recognized the son of Shoko Asahara, the former leader of the cult Aum Shinrikyo (now known as Aleph), as an executive member of the organization. Shoko Asahara, whose real name was Chizuo Matsumoto, was previously sentenced to death for his role in a series of crimes, including the infamous Tokyo subway sarin gas attack in 1995.
This recognition marks the first time that the commission has classified a member of Asahara’s family in such a capacity. In light of this development, the commission has decided to extend the prohibition on the use of Aleph’s facilities for an additional six months as part of ongoing efforts to prevent any resurgence of the group’s activities.
