The sales deadline for stockpiled rice, which has been available through discretionary contracts since May of this year, is quickly approaching at the end of August. Some major retailers are expressing concerns that they may not sell all their stock before the deadline, prompting calls for an extension.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan is considering the implications of extending this deadline. They are wary that such an extension could affect the prices of newly harvested rice that will soon enter the market.
