On the morning of the 15th at approximately 3:25 AM local time, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake occurred near Akiyoshima, which is part of Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan. The earthquake’s epicenter was located off the coast of the Tokara Islands, a group of islands situated between Kyushu and Yakushima in the southern part of the country. The quake struck at a depth of 20 kilometers (about 12.4 miles).
No tsunami warning has been issued following this seismic event. The intensity of shaking was recorded as a level 3 on the Japanese seismic scale, which indicates that it was felt by many residents but is not typically damaging.
For reference, Kagoshima Prefecture is located on the southern tip of Japan’s main island, Kyushu, and is known for its volcanic activity and beautiful landscapes.
