Recent heavy rainfall in Kumamoto City, located in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan, has led to significant flooding in the downtown area. Experts who investigated the situation found that the city’s central business district is situated at a lower elevation compared to its surroundings, which contributed to the flooding. The intense rainfall overwhelmed the drainage systems, resulting in what is known as ‘internal flooding’—a term used to describe flooding that occurs due to excessive rainwater that cannot be effectively drained away.
Experts emphasize the importance of understanding local flooding risks and encourage residents and businesses to take proactive measures to mitigate potential damage from future weather events.
